IJGT at The Architects Golf Club - Final Results

Mactas Shoots Career Low to Win First Major

The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) made its annual trip to the Architects Golf Club for the first Major Championship of the season. The picturesque golf venue, where each hole honors a different historic golf architect, proved to be a tremendous challenge for some of the top junior golfers in the Northeast at the nationally ranked junior event on Oct. 13-14, 2012.

Jared Mactas from Woodcliff Lake, N.J. has competed a few times in the annual IJGT event at Architects Golf Club, but has left the course empty-handed. Having already decided that this would be his last IJGT appearance before he made the move up to the collegiate ranks, Mactas had his mind set on breaking through the wall that seemed to have formed between him and this event.

"I came into this year and just decided I was going to win," said Mactas. "I worked on my new putting stroke and it really worked out for me."

Mactas' opening round 68 (-3) was good enough to give him a three-stroke cushion going into the final round. He came out firing on all cylinders on Sunday morning, going four-under on his first five holes of the day. Despite a late charge by Curren Mody from Monmouth Junction, N.J, who's final round 68 (-3) captured him the Clazic Belt Low Final Round honor, Mactas was able to hold on to the lead with his final round 70 (-1) to give him his first IJGT Major victory and a new career low total. Mody's two-day total of 142 left him two strokes behind Mactas for the runner-up position, while Anthony Sebastianelli from Clarks Summit, Pa. rounded out the top three with his 144 two-day total.

William Thomson from Pittsford, N.Y. was the talk of the course on Saturday as news spread about the putting clinic he put on display at the Architects Golf Club. He putted his way to an opening round 71 (E) to give him a six-stroke lead going into the final round on Sunday.

Thomson was confident he was going to be able to cruise his way to his second IJGT victory on the season in as many weeks, but a triple on the par 4 fifth hole began a four hole skid where he went eight over par. That is where John Felitto from Mountainside, N.J. made his move to capitalize on Thomson's misfortunes and gain the lead with only nine holes to play. Thomson and Felitto battled in those final nine holes trading momentum with each other, but in the end the division title was captured by Felitto.

Finishing with a two-day total of 149 (78-71), Felitto earned his first IJGT Major Championship. Thomson finished in the runner-up position for the third time this season. Ryan Rodriguez from Highland Mills, N.Y. rounded out the top three with a two-day total of 155.

Emily Mills from Farmingdale, N.J. found herself sitting atop the leaderboard in her first IJGT appearance of the season. She was able to battle through the bitter cold temperatures on Saturday to put up an opening round score of 74 (+3), which gave her a mere one-stroke lead going into the final round on Sunday.

Conservative was the name of the game for Mills in her final round. "I just tried to stay one step ahead of the other girls, and take things one shot at a time," said Mills.

She did just that as her final round 77 (+6) was just enough to give her a two-stroke victory over the Vik sisters from Greenwich, Conn. Susana Vik edged out her older sister with her two-day total of 153, while Camilla Vik rounded out the top three with a two-day total of 154. Alexis Hios from Rye, N.Y. also made her mark on the weekend as she walked away with the Clazic Belt Low Final Round honor with her 74 (+3).

The IJGT will be moving on to the Blue Course at Penn State on Oct. 20-21 for the IJGT College Classic. The event will also feature an on-site appearance from the IJGT Director of College Placement, Ann Maness. She will be conducting college placement consultations with the competing juniors at the event. To schedule a consultation, or for more information, please call (843) 785-2444 or email Ann.Maness@juniorsports.com.
